Paint Sprayer vs Paint Brushes: which to choose

Do Paint Sprayers Use More Paint Than A Brush?

In short, the answer is yes. Paint Sprayers use three times more paint than a traditional brush or paint roller. It also depends on the brand and type of paint you are using, In general at the end, the thickness of the paint and the quality of the paint also matters the most.

As I told you it also depends on the project of your work on which you are allowing the paint to get utilized.

For example:-

  • If we take one gallon of paint for "brushing or rolling" then we would paint up to 410 square feet or even more
  • If we take one gallon of paint for "Spraying" then we would paint up to 160 to 210 square feet only.

So the average ratio between the spraying and brushing is 1:3. So spraying uses three times more paint than the brushes.

Why it uses more paint?

Paint Sprayers use more paint because when the paint comes out from the sprayers, it comes in the form of tiny droplets. In which most of them just carried away with the wind.

Whereas in brushes, the paint sticks to the surface and there is just a minute loss of paint.

It also depends on the thickness of the paint, if the paint is less thick then there are chances that most of the paint would just be carried away in the winds.

As a result, make sure to use good thick paint, which would help in saving most of them.

Paint Spraying as many benefits but a waste of paint isn't one of them. So make sure a good quality of paint.

Disadvantages of Paint Sprayers:-

  • Uses more paint than a regular brush
  • Most of the paint get waste along with the wind
  • There can be errors if not done with perfect or non-experienced

How to use less paint while spraying:-

  • Avoid sprayers in wind:-
As I told many times that most of the droplets of paint get blown away with the wind. Even 6-5mph wind speed is enough.
  • Pump paint back:-
The remaining of the paint in the sprayer shouldn't be thrown away, instead of pump paint back to the surface.
  • Be Near to the surface for spraying:-
The farther you move the more paint gets blown away with air. so be nearer when you are spraying.
